Job Description

 

Position status: Part-time (non-merit), 15-25 hrs/wk

Department: IT/Theatres, specifically Dome Operations

Shift: As scheduled. Theatre programs are offered 7 days/wk, 363 days/yr; 11am-8pm; Some holidays may be required.

  

Summary:

 

Present educational programs to schools, groups and the general public in the planetarium theatre.  Interact with patrons and respond to questions relating to the facility, space science, astronomy, sky observing, and current events.

 

Primary duties:

  • Operate sophisticated computer systems and other special effects in the planetarium theatre, including lasers.
  • Operate the Evans & Sutherland Digistar (v7) planetarium projection system—hardware and software.
  • Present both live-narrated and automated programs to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Be able to diagnose minor operating problems and conduct repairs as needed.
  • Assist the Guest Experiences Team with taking tickets, ushering patrons, and maintaining basic theatre cleanliness.

 

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with the general operation of computers. Visual presentation software skills and programming aptitude are a plus.
  • Showmanship, public speaking, group interaction. Must be willing to initiate and engage others in conversation.
  • Strong science education background, preferably physics, astronomy, mathematics, or chemistry. All science experience does not need to be in the way of formal education – a balanced level of academics, informal education and self-teaching is acceptable.
  • Proven experience in effective communications.
  • Must be able to work in dark spaces, cramped spaces, under desks and counters, climb ladders and small steps, work behind the dome, and lift up to 50lbs.
