JOB SUMMARY

 

Performs arboricultural work such as tree planting, inspecting, diagnosing, pruning, fertilizing, watering, tree removal, and maintenance. Follows and monitors the safety practices of assigned staff and enforces applicable section, county, state and federal safe work regulations to protect staff and the general public from injury or accident. Supervises part-time and seasonal staff in tree and park maintenance.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Arboriculture or college/university credit for courses in Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, Plant Science or other courses directly related to arboriculture, plus one (1) year of direct field experience. The educational requirements may be substituted for at least two (2) years of experience as a commercial arborist's apprentice or other closely related work experience.

Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Must possess a current Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Medical Card.

Obtain and maintain a current certification in pest control, tree disease, and an applicator's license for pesticides and herbicides.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive. The omission of specific duties and responsibilities will not preclude it from the position.

Applicants must be prepared to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Performs arboricultural work in the County park system to include, but not limited to: tree planting; inspecting, diagnosing and resolving tree problems; pruning, fertilizing, watering, removing, and other tree maintenance activities. Reports power line clearance hindrances and obstructions to the appropriate utility or agency.
  • Prepares work schedules and coordinates task assignments with other staff as necessary and utilizes hand and power tools to accomplish the work.
  • Performs manual and assisted labor activities to include, but not limited to: loading trucks and/or trailers with logs, limbs and other tree litter; operating a boom/bucket truck, tractors, backhoes, dump truck, stump remover, chipper, spraying equipment, chain saw, hydraulic pruning tool and other power equipment.
  • Frequently inspects and/or performs preventative maintenance and routine repairs on vehicles, equipment and tools used in arboricultural and grounds maintenance work, to ensure safe and efficient operation. For more extensive repairs submit servicing requests to the appropriate section staff and/or supervisor.
  • Coordinates task efforts with the Construction and Maintenance Supervisor to ensure tree maintenance functions comply with the best criteria for the parks and facilities in the County system. Performs on-site inspections.
  • Supervises part-time and seasonal staff in tree and park maintenance to include tree planting, fertilizing, watering, removal, etc.
  • Monitors the safety practices of assigned staff and enforces applicable section, County, State and Federal safe work regulations to protect staff and the general public from injury or accident.
  • Provides input to supervisor for preparation of bid specifications on trees, shrubs, and other plant material and for tools, equipment, vehicles and supplies.
  • Responds to public inquiries about tree care and maintenance.
  • Reviews and remains apprised of the latest technology and developments in urban forestry and related grounds maintenance.
  • Frequently inspects and monitors parks, grounds, and equipment for safety and checks for human related risk factors. Takes corrective action where practical or posts warning notices if corrective action is not possible and reports unsafe or potentially hazardous conditions to supervisor.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records and documentation on all work completed at each park and recreation facility.
  • Assists in the general maintenance of parks and recreation facilities.
