Job Description

Public Works Employee Incentives:

JOB SUMMARY

Performs  semi-skilled and skilled electrical and street lighting installation and maintenance. Assists highway maintenance with snow removal.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Two (2) years of experience in a field closely related to these duties.

 

A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah is required.

 

Must possess a current Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Medical Card at the time of hire.

 

Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within thirty (30) days of hire.

 

Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within one (1) year of hire.

 

Must obtain a Flagging Certification within three (3) months of hire.

 

Must obtain a Forklift Certification within three (3) months of hire.

 

Must obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) certification within one (1) year of hire.

 

Must obtain a Heavy Equipment certification within six (6) months of hire.

 

Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled electrical assistance, highway maintenance, landscaping, concrete, and asphalt work, and snow removal duties.
  • Assists in setting up and performing traffic control.
  • Performs manual labor involved in pulling cable and assisting Linemen/Electricians, saw cutting, road maintenance, sidewalk repair, landscaping, flood control/drainage, snow removal, tree trimming, erecting fences, and other work as directed.
  • Performs tasks requiring the use of a variety of light and heavy equipment, hand tools, and pneumatic tools.
  • Acts as Heavy Equipment Operator in their absence; operates boom/line truck as needed.
  • Maintains tools and equipment making minor repairs, keeping clean and stored.
  • Complies with all internal safety policies, OSHA and MUTCD regulations.
  • Performs pre- and post-trip inspections of equipment; reports mechanical or equipment problems.
  • Responds to public inquiries courteously and professionally.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

Knowledge of:  

  • Traffic signal installation and street light maintenance
  • Light and Heavy equipment and operating practices
  • Hazards and safety precautions common to electrical, highway, construction, district, landscape, flood control/drainage, and snow removal
  • Salt Lake County roads locations and jurisdictions
  • Basic principles and practices of Salt Lake County (policy and procedure) and Operations SOP
  • PW Operations emergency operating standard
  • Basic mechanical and electrical construction and maintenance
  • Basic traffic signal and street light construction and maintenance

 

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment used in conduit installation, trenching,  storm drain maintenance, construction, district, landscaping, and flood control
  • Perform daily maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools
  • Operate light and heavy equipment in adverse weather conditions
  • Use computers and software related to job specific duties
  • Use common and specialized tools and materials of electrical trades
  • Follow verbal and written procedures and instructions
  • Operate two-way radio
  • Maintain effective working relationships with the public and co-workers
  • Prepare and maintain daily records and reports
  • Comply with standard safety practices and procedures common to electrical installation, storm drain maintenance, construction, sweeping, snow removal, highway, and flood control
  • Solve problems and make sound decisions to protect property and personnel

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires driving, standing, squatting and sitting in uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time; a full range of motion in the shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, legs, and feet; and manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

 

Requires bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 60 pounds on an intermittent basis. Constant exposure to traffic hazards, weather, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, fumes, grease, and unsanitary conditions. Noise levels can be extreme.
