JOB SUMMARY

Performs complex studies on the distribution and determinants of infectious diseases and other public health issues. Conducts surveillance activities and investigations of reportable diseases. Collects, manages, and analyzes data and makes recommendations for infection prevention, control and eradication.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Community Health, or other closely related field, plus three (3) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.
 
A valid Driver’s License accepted by the State of Utah is required at the time of hire. A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah must be obtained within six (6) months of hire to operate a County vehicle.
 
It is mandatory that all new hires receive the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis) vaccine before beginning employment or provide a copy of their immunization record prior to starting employment. The immunization record must show the vaccine name and date received. 
 
Upon hire, a two-step Tuberculosis skin test will be required. The first will need to be placed prior to starting employment.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Manages active and passive surveillance activities on infectious diseases, environmental health events, public health syndromes, chronic diseases, injuries, and similar issues. Develops conclusions from surveillance data and identifies implications for public health programs.
  • Designs instruments and methods for the collection and analysis of disease-related data. Evaluates usefulness of information collected and makes changes as needed. Communicates key findings from data analysis to decision makers and the public.
  • Conducts and leads field investigations to determine sources of illness.
  • Utilizes, maintains, and modifies public health databases used to organize and analyze data, ensuring the confidentiality of information.
  • Interprets data using epidemiological methods to describe public health problems, population impacted, and factors contributing to the findings. Provides data to help establish targeted prevention activities and program goals and provides education as needed.
  • Collaborates and serves as a liaison with health care providers, health agencies, law enforcement agencies, and other key partners to identify cases that meet surveillance criteria and obtain information needed for investigations.
  • Receives and follows-up on reports about suspected bio-terrorism.
  • Publishes and/or presents results from data analysis for annual report and other publications.
  • Researches, prepares, and submits grant proposals.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

  • Statistical methods and applicability to fulfill project needs

  • Chronic and infectious diseases

Additional Information

This position will conduct activities with a focus on various vector borne and vaccine preventable diseases to address outbreak identification and investigation, analysis, and dissemination of communicable disease information. They will track and identify disease trends, including emerging infections, by assessing and enhancing communicable disease surveillance, and by conducting disease investigations and education for preventing, detecting and controlling communicable diseases in Salt Lake County.

 

The regular work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, evening and weekends may be required due to emergent disease outbreak. Week long on-call shifts are required 3-5 times per year. With supervisor approval this position may be hybrid with the possibility of working up to 3 days from home.

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION

Employees are expected to be available, as identified by management, to provide on-call coverage for public health emergencies in regard to communicable disease and bioterrorism investigation and response protocols.
