JOB SUMMARY

 

Facilitates and supervises the planning, staffing, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of recreation, sport, child care, leisure-time, and community events in an assigned service area.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college of university in Recreation, or other closely related field, plus two (2) years of related experience in a position of progressively more responsible experience including supervisor, management, leadership, budgetary, or project management; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

 

A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah may be required to operate a vehicle.

 

Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive. The omission of specific duties and responsibilities will not preclude it from the position.

  • Identifies the need and feasibility for a wide variety of recreation, sports, childcare, and leisure-time programs.
  • Plans, promotes, implements, and manages special events that afford participation of diverse community interest groups.
  • Supervises staff, which includes hiring, orienting, training, assigning and reviewing work performance, annual work performance appraisals, and discipline.
  • Formulates and prepares annual program action plans in accordance with established Division guidelines.
  • Creates partnerships and coordinates with other organizations and agencies to utilize joint programming opportunities.
  • Reviews and evaluates assigned programs for effectiveness.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of program standards, policies, and procedures within an assigned service area.
  • Oversees, supervises, and coordinates the use of County and non-County facilities and grounds.
  • Coordinates the maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment and ensures industry and Division safety and cleanliness standards are maintained.
  • Reviews all cash handling, billing, and collection within the service area in compliance with the Division's cash handling policies and procedures.
  • Prepares, monitors, and supervises assigned budget line-items in accordance with established County and Division policies and procedures.
  • Represents assigned area by attending community functions and meetings.
  • Assigns and evaluates subordinate employee performance and identifies training the development needs to ensure County and Division policies and procedures, standards, and objectives are met.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA)

 

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, practices, and techniques of public recreation administration
  • Management and operation of recreation facilities and equipment
  • Budget preparation and justification, monitoring, forecasting and methods of fiscal control
  • Public relation principles and techniques

 

Skills and Abilities to:

  • Develop objectives, policies, and procedures for the Division
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Organize and prioritize projects, tasks, and own work in an effective and timely manner
  • Supervise and train staff
  • Maintain effective working relationships with Division, County and community employees and partners
  • Develop recreational programs adapted to the particular needs of the assigned community
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to use computers, phones, and other standard office equipment and software

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Must be able to intermittently lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Employee will occasionally work in outdoor conditions and be exposed to all seasons of weather.

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION

 

May be required to work holidays, nights, and weekends as needed. Ability to work extended shifts during special events, tournaments and community functions. Ability to work up to, or beyond, 40 hours a week in an office setting.

 

Candidate will oversee the programming and supervision of both Aquatic and Land programs and employees of the South Jordan Recreation Center
