Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

 

The Salt Lake County Health Department is seeking a history, archivist, library science, or public health student for summer 2025 to organize and catalog our historic photo archive in preparation for transfer to the Salt Lake County Archive Vaults. May also digitize select items, too.

 

This intern will review historic public health photos and slides, and then organize, group, and catalog them appropriately. Cataloging may require researching the topics and scenes (via reference sources and/or employee interviews) depicted to ensure appropriate organization and labeling. The intern is expected to follow archival science best practices for permanent, protective storage of historic records.

 

The health archives/history intern will be introduced to a variety of current and historic public health topics and practices and will gain experience in research and reference, verbal and written communication, project management, archival best practices, and technology tools.

 

Work is Monday through Friday, 16 to 20 hours per week. Exact days and hours are flexible to accommodate a school schedule but should be consistent week-to-week.

 

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor OR Graduate program. Preferred programs would include History, Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, Museum Studies, and/or Public Health.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Organizes historic physical materials to ensure their long-term safety and security
  • Maintains and/or creates files or record-keeping systems.
  • Sorts, labels, and files documents or other materials.
  • Researches historic records (documents and/or images) to ensure accurate classification and organization.
  • Works in both office and records warehouse settings and requires the ability to lift 40 lbs. boxes, walk, sit, kneel, and bend.
  • Processes, creates finding aids and digitizes historical records.
  • Performs in-house digitization project tasks, including post-digitization image processing, quality control, and file transfer using various digitation workflow management tools.

PAY: $20.00/hour

START DATE: The internship begins May 2025 (start date flexible) and ends August 2025. There may be the possibility of an extension.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Intern will work from the Salt Lake County Government Complex with the opportunity for remote hours within the state of Utah. They will be provided a computer and an email account. Interns may be asked to attend meetings off-site, at other government facilities, or in the community. Interns may be sitting for long periods at a computer.
