Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

 

Gathers, collects, and picks up litter and refuse at solid waste facilities (landfill & transfer station) and along approach roads to the facilities. Monitors incoming waste loads for hazardous materials.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

One (1) year of closely related experience, such as working in or around construction sites, landfills, recycling facilities, compost operations or other similar outdoor work is preferred.

 

Must possess a valid driver’s license in the State of Utah at the time of hire. Must have a good attitude and good customer service skills.

 

Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Picks up litter on and around the landfill & transfer station and engages in litter control activities.
  • Enforces agency safety requirements and procedures; takes appropriate action.
  • Inspects vehicles for hazardous waste material in coordination with primary inspection staff.
  • Communicates with the public regarding services. Informs the public where to properly unload solid, recyclable, and house-hold hazardous waste material.
  • Directs vehicles with different waste streams to various unloading areas around the landfill.
  • May assist in the preparation of alternative daily cover as needed.
  • Completes daily work reports and logs.
  • May operate basic equipment as needed, ie, forklift & hand tools.

Knowledge of:

 

  • Safe outdoor protection techniques from heat or cold
  • How to recognize hazardous materials markers and placards
  • Use of a two-way radio

 

Skills and Abilities to:

 

  • Communicate effectively
  • Ability to work alone or as part of a team
  • Follow written and verbal instructions
  • Perform manual labor in extreme weather conditions

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

This position requires outdoor work and being on your feet in the elements for extended periods; a full range of motion in the shoulders, arms, hands, wrists, legs, and feet; and manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.

Requires bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 60 pounds on an intermittent basis.

 

Work is performed outdoors with exposure to all elements. Constant exposure to traffic hazards, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, fumes, grease, and unsanitary conditions.

 

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION

 

The Solid Waste Division is open six (6) days a week and is open on most holidays. This position will require working different shifts, weekends, and holidays. This position is subject to being called to work before or after the scheduled shift.
