Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Salt Lake County Office of Regional Development (ORD) is seeking a Communications and Multimedia Intern for the Summer 2026 term. This internship is ideal for students interested in public sector communications, with a focus on social media, website content, and community-facing programs.


The intern will support communications efforts tied to key ORD initiatives, including Housing & Community Development (HCD) programs and Sustainability initiatives, while also assisting with broader communications needs across the department. This is a hands-on opportunity to contribute to real projects that impact residents across Salt Lake County.


Work is primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule. Occasional evening or weekend work may be requested.


Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Graduate program.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

• Assist with social media content creation, scheduling, and monitoring across ORD platforms
• Support website updates, including drafting and formatting content aligned with County standards and best practices
• Develop visual content such as graphics, flyers, and digital materials to support HCD and Sustainability programs
• Help translate complex program information into clear, accessible public-facing content
• Collaborate with staff across ORD divisions and other County departments to support communications needs and highlight program outcomes
• Assist with tracking and organizing communications materials, content calendars, and project workflows
• Support outreach efforts for public meetings, funding opportunities, and community initiatives
• Provide general communications support for campaigns, events, and special projects
• Other duties as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in graphic design, photography, and video is required.
  • Solid understanding of the different social media platforms.
  • Consistent demonstration of responsibility and initiative.
  • Ability to complete tasks under deadlines while managing multiple projects.
  • Motivated, creative, detail-oriented, adaptable, and dependable.
  • Knowledge of graphic design and layout principles with professional software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Canva (or similar Video editing tool).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organizational and project management skills
• Students pursuing Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or related fields are preferred

 

PAY: $17-20/hour

 

START DATE: The internship begins in May 2026 and ends in August 2026

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Intern will work from the Salt Lake County Government Complex, with the opportunity for remote hours within the state of Utah. They will be provided with a computer and an email account. Intern may be asked to attend meetings off-site, at other government facilities, or in the community. Interns may be sitting for long periods of time at a computer.

An “At Will”, FLSA non-exempt employee who is not eligible for County benefits and who must work an average of 29 hours or less per week or an average of 129 hours or less per month.
